Urban League of Greater Miami to Host “First Day Ready” Back-to-School Event
MIAMI (July 16, 2026) – The Urban League of Greater Miami is committed to empowering families, removing barriers, and expanding opportunities for success. This commitment will come to life on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, with First Day Ready, a free community-wide back-to-school event from 9:00am to 4:00pm at Renaissance at Sugar Hill Apartments (1425 NW 71st Street, Miami, FL 33147).
Open to all students entering Kindergarten through 12th grade, the event will provide free essential services to help families prepare for the new school year. Families may register up to three (3) children per household for appointment-based hair and health services.
Services include 150 free hair braiding appointments, 150 free haircut appointments, and 300 health service appointments offering school physicals, immunizations, primary care services, and dental exams. Families can also enjoy a community resource fair featuring more than 20 local organizations, free child safety resources, free food, and a children’s play area. Additional services and activities available include the Miami-Dade County Community Affairs Unit (Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department), City of Miami Police ice cream truck, and the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Police Athletic League (PAL) with therapy dogs.
“A child’s future should never be determined by a family’s zip code or paycheck. The confidence that comes from a fresh haircut, beautifully braided hair, and access to essential health care is more than preparation for the first day of school—it is a declaration that every child belongs, every child matters, and every child deserves to be seen. At the Urban League of Greater Miami, we believe that when a community invests in a child’s dignity before the first bell rings, that child walks into the classroom ready not just to learn, but to lead. This is how we build stronger students, stronger families, and a stronger Miami.”
First Day Ready brings together local barbers, braiders, healthcare providers, and community organizations to remove barriers that can keep students from starting school with confidence. In addition to appointments, families will have access to year-round resources that support education, health, workforce development, financial empowerment, and family stability.
Hair and health services are available by scheduled appointment only, and pre-registration is required. Families are encouraged to register early, as appointment availability is limited.
