Urban League of Greater Miami to Celebrate Grand Opening of New Empowerment Center and Launch Young Professionals

MIAMI (October 19, 2026) – The Urban League of Greater Miami, Inc. will celebrate the grand opening of its new Empowerment Center on Thursday, October 29, 2026, at 6:30pm, marking a new chapter in the organization’s commitment to expanding opportunity and strengthening communities across Miami.

Located in the heart of Miami’s Liberty City neighborhood at 798 NW 62nd St, Miami, FL, 33127, the Empowerment Center will serve as a new hub for the Urban League’s education and workforce development efforts, connecting youth, families, job seekers, and community members with programs, resources, and pathways designed to support personal and professional growth. The center will also provide space for community connection and engagement, creating opportunities for residents, partners, and local organizations to come together around shared interests and efforts that strengthen the broader Miami community.

“The opening of our new Empowerment Center represents more than an investment in a building; it is an investment in the promise and potential of Miami’s people. For too many families, opportunity has been shaped by ZIP code, income, or circumstance. We are here to challenge that reality. This center will confront barriers, expand possibilities, and equip individuals and families to build the futures they deserve,” said Dr. Makeda Johnson, President and CEO of the Urban League of Greater Miami. “As the Urban League of Greater Miami enters its next chapter, we honor the legacy of those who came before us by advancing it with renewed purpose and an unwavering commitment to economic mobility, equity, and empowerment. Because Miami’s progress is greatest when opportunity rises for everyone—and every person has the chance to rise with it.”

The celebration will mark the launch of the Urban League of Greater Miami Young Professionals, a new auxiliary engaging local adults ages 21–40 who want to connect with their community, support the Urban League’s mission, and help advance opportunities for individuals and families throughout Miami. The group will create opportunities for young professionals of all backgrounds to connect with the community and contribute to its continued growth.

The event will introduce the Convening of the Elders, a monthly gathering honoring the voices, experiences, and legacy of community elders. The inaugural gathering will feature a conversation between the Young Professionals president, Aaron Jordan, and Bea L. Hines, a pioneering journalist who joined The Miami Herald in 1970 as its first Black female reporter. Throughout her career, Hines used her platform to amplify the voices and experiences of her community.

Community members, partners, elected officials, and supporters are invited to join the Urban League of Greater Miami for the celebration.
