The Urban League of Greater Miami brought together seniors from the Overtown community and representatives from the City of Miami Police Department for its first Community Police Relations (CPR) panel, creating an opportunity for open conversation about safety, concerns, and the issues affecting older adults in their everyday lives.
Focused on Senior Safety, the discussion addressed some of the challenges seniors face in an increasingly digital world, particularly online and phone scams. Participants learned about ways to recognize potential scams, protect their personal information, and take steps to avoid becoming victims of fraud.
Just as important, the panel gave attendees an opportunity to ask questions, share personal experiences, and speak directly with law enforcement about the safety concerns that matter most to them. These conversations help create a better understanding of the challenges facing seniors and the ways law enforcement can more effectively engage with and support the community.
The discussion is only the beginning. Feedback and concerns shared during the panel will be brought back to law enforcement to help inform future engagement and strengthen efforts to address the needs of the senior community.
Building safer communities requires more than a single conversation. It takes consistent listening, collaboration, and a willingness to turn community voices into meaningful action. Through initiatives like this, the Urban League of Greater Miami continues to create opportunities for residents and community partners to come together around issues that directly affect their quality of life.
The Urban League of Greater Miami thanks the seniors who participated stories of their own personal experiences, and the City of Miami Police Department representatives who helped make this first conversation possible.
This event was held as part of the Urban League of Greater Miami’s Crime Prevention & Intervention initiative, funded by the Florida Office of the Attorney General.
