More than 150 people crowded into Covenant Palms on August 6th for a community forum in which all five candidates for the Miami-Dade School Board seat being vacated by Dr. Solomon Stinson made their case to potential voters.
District 2 is home to 8 of the county’s 13 “F” rated schools, including long-failing high schools like Northwestern, Edison and Miami Central. The five candidates presented their vision for leading the district out of its present educational crisis, and for creating as much urgency for academic achievement as there currently exists for high school football.
They also took questions submitted to the League by audience members.
The forum was hosted by the Urban League Posse, its community volunteer arm, and was moderated by Urban League of Greater Miami education and program director Sharron Henley.
The candidates for District 2 are: Darryl Franklin Reaves, Dorothy Bendross-Mindingall, Vanessa Woodard Byers, Sandra ‘Sandy’ S. Moise and Ronda Vangates. The Urban League has posted bios of each of the candidates here.
