“Man Up” to Fight HIV/AIDS

(MIAMI) Miami-Dade ranks number one in HIV and AIDS cases in the State of Florida, and within the county, Liberty City ranks first in both HIV and AIDS cases, with 8% of the population, but 20% and 18% of the reported AIDS and HIV cases. According to the Miami-Dade Health Department, 1 in 45 Black Miami-Dade residents and 1 in 179 Hispanics is living with HIV or AIDS.
“Man Up to Fight HIV/AIDS” will take place on Friday, December 15th and will bring together more than 300 male Miami-Dade public high school students to discuss the ongoing urban epidemic of HIV/AIDS, in which 7 out of 10 of those contracting the virus are male. The forum is part of a national “Act Against AIDS” initiative by the Centers for Disease Control and is conducted in partnership with MDCPS District 2 School Board Member Dr. Dorothy Bendross-Mindingall, Urban League of Greater Miami, Inc., Miami-Dade Health Department, Florida Department of Health, Jessie Trice Family Health Center, Miami-Dade County Public Schools, NAACP Miami-Dade Chapter, Miami Dolphins Alumni, the National Urban League and the National Crime Stop and Co-sponsored by State Crime Prevention & Intervention.
