Do Americans really care about gun violence? Do we care that toddlers were shot in a kindergarten classroom in Connecticut? That shoppers died in a Buffalo supermarket or a Walmart in Texas? Do we care that worshippers were killed at a Bible study in South Carolina? Do you realize that mass shootings occur in the workplace, at concerts, at churches, at schools, and at grocery stores and supermarkets?
Is there any place that is safe from gun violence in America? Why are we the only country in the world that has this type of violence? Is it the estimated 300 million guns we have circulation? Is it weak gun laws or lax background checks? Is it the NRA and the Republican politicians who have been bought and paid for by the gun lobby?
Are there more Americans in support of gun violence than those against it? Do Republicans not have a heart or conscience and are completely unaffected by the slaughter of children?
Former President Donald Trump advocates arming teachers as an answer to the carnage. This country has more guns in civilian hands than any other country in the world, and – no surprise – we have the most incidents of gun violence, by far. If trained police officers are afraid to enter an active shooting, why and how should we expect that a kindergarten teacher would?
In Parkland, Fla., and Uvalde, police, trained professionals, waited outside while a shooter went on a rampage. Teachers are not trained to confront a shooter. After Columbine, Sandy Hook, Parkland and hundreds of other school shootings, why would any police officer not be trained to confront an active shooter and why would they hesitate in doing so?
