For 67 years, the Urban League of Greater Miami has challenged the status quo — from “pushing out the pushers” to demanding action for Black Miamians on jobs and education. Today, we face a crisis of unprecedented proportions, as high drop out rates, low graduation rates, failing schools, crime and violence threaten to destroy our communities. So even as we celebrate our birthday, and the 100th anniversary of the National Urban League, the Miami Urban League is taking action, every day, to reverse the crises facing our community.
What we’re doing:
The Development Revolution is challenging adults in our neighborhoods to form a “community of concern,” stepping up to the plate and doing their part to encourage every young person they know to stay in school and get a good education;
We’ve adopted West Little River Elementary School, and we’re continuing to work closely with Holmes Elementary and other schools to attack the education gap early, before these schools feed our children to failing middle and high schools;
We’re challenging the next commissioner of District 2 to be accountable to the children. District 2 has more failing schools than any other in Miami-Dade, so this year, we held a candidate forum to give the parents and other committed adults the chance to question the people who want to lead the district.
We’re pushing students to pass, not fear, the FCAT, and encouraging innovative educational options like charter schools. And we’re putting words into action, by helping more than 1,500 kids a year pass the FCAT test through our afters school programs.
And we’re encouraging you to do your part as well. So what can you do to help the children of Liberty City?
- Read our Report Card on Black America, outlining the challenges we face all across this country.
- Take the Development Revolution Pledge, and commit to giving of your time and talent to save the children of Liberty City.
Pregnant
Thanks for this article. I have a website for pregnant women and at the moment I have a client that has to deal with pregnancy. I fear for the child’s health so I am doing some research of how to help my client the best I can. And this has been very useful. So yet again, I want to thank you a bunch!
